Can you honestly see yourself somewhere better?

Something interesting happens in your brain when you hear things like:

Close your eyes. Envision yourself in a big room. Dark tapestries drape the walls, it’s dusk outside and there is one candle in the middle of this vast room…

OR

Once, long ago in a small mountain town, an event occurred that forever altered the world as we know it now. A young fellow with a shock of golden hair was meandering down a trail when he stumbled upon the remains of a carriage…

No matter your personality style or creativeness (or lack), anyone immediately goes into seeing with their mind’s eye. You stop, forget about your literal circumstances and without moving your physical being, you’re in a different place.

This folks, is quite possibly one of the most consistent traits of people who achieve significant life change. They can ‘see’ themselves in a different reality. Notice I said ‘reality’. Not dreams or ideals, but they see another vision of a possible R-E-A-L-I-T-Y.

Now real quick, don’t dismiss yourself due to your personality style or natural bent. This surpasses logic or right/left brain. We’re all born with this ability. But it has ‘belief’ at the root. We don’t see what we can’t believe, and every day from youth forward, we tend to believe less and less about ourselves and possible realities. But when things get dire, our belief changes and we can ‘see’ new things.

Zig Ziglar has a classic speech on ‘Believing in yourself’ where he tells the story of going from a horrid sales guy, to #2 in the country out of 7,000. From one year to the next, like flipping a switch. What changed? His boss told him he had all the makings of a great salesperson, he was just not harnessing them. All of the sudden Zig saw himself differently, and he started acting in a way that supported that new vision. Nothing changed except his belief…and therefore, sight.

Since this time last week, we’ve had 81 new members in Free Agent Academy (now that we opened it up fully for only $5). These folks are going through the initial courses and groups and putting pen to paper. Over and over they’re sharing, “I’ve not ever seen things this way and it’s drastically increasing my hope and belief…” It’s incredible.

It’s not a magic pill or lucky break. It’s just stopping and doing some work to step back, assess and think through things like never before. In business development we put a big focus on the necessity of working ON your business, not just IN your business.

In life we spend most of our time working IN our lives. But folks…let me clue you in to something important; reading self-help books, reading blogs and listening to podcasts is not working ON your life. It may help you THINK ABOUT your life. But to work ON your life you have to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and fill in the blanks about yourself.

This is the work to help you see yourself a different way, in a different place. A better place. A righter and truer and healthier place. Fulfilling, rewarding, abundant, impacting, influential, peaceful, inspiring. Worthy. Valuable. Meaningful. Purposeful. Consequential.

You gotta be able to see it. Seeing is believing, eh?

If you stop and ask yourself right now, though you may desire a different reality and circumstance in your life, can you really see it, or must you admit you’ve lost true sight of anything different or better?

    Another stellar post Kevin.

As a self-described Information Pachinko Machine, I love to read blogs/books/white-papers and listen to podcasts. It wasn’t until I moved towards processing these topics into ways to connect with my clients that I would say I started working ON my life.

Taking all the knowledge and putting it into practice was when/where that I began to truly change myself and to help/influence others.

In Star Wars Episode 2, Dex says to Obi-Wan “I should think that you Jedi would have more respect for the difference between knowledge and…wisdom.”

I’ve been told many times that wisdom comes from doing- knowledge from reading/listening.

Thank you Eric. Great point…great word from you. Geez, that should just be a blog in and of itself, discussing knowledge and wisdom. Thanks for sharing stellar counsel.

    Kevin, great insight, as always.

I think the biggest challenge in seeing things differently is dealing with those things beyond one’s immediate influence. There are things over which we can exercise enormous influence, things like what we read and what we watch, what we do physically with our bodies, etc. I love the truth that our thoughts create our feelings, and that by controlling our thoughts, we control our feelings.

BUT, as much control as we might have over ourselves, we often have little or no influence over others, or not as much as we’d like. We can’t force others to feel a certain way, or act a certain way. Changing the actions of others involves their thoughts and their feelings. We may have some influence over those, but no control. We can do nothing about their past experiences that have created their current worldview. By ourselves, we have little control over the physical world around us. The town you woke up to this morning probably looks much the same as when you woke up yesterday. Or, huge forces beyond your control, like Hurricane Sandy, may have had an impact in one day that may take hundreds of people weeks to undo.

We can only create a new reality or circumstance on the outside by using what we have on the inside. If we look only to the outside, it is too easy to see only the obstacles, the things beyond our influence. I love that Free Agent Academy is about building free agents as people, rather than just a “business in a box” factory. The business is the fruit of the growing the agent, not the agent being created by growing the business.

Such a good point Joseph. As I mentioned in the Zig analogy, the change is only our personal paradigm and belief, and thus…our actions and performance. Thanks brother.

I totally believe in what you’re saying Kevin. I believe we get so caught up in our daily living ( family, work, & responsibilities) it’s hard to see the forest from the trees. We respond to life in a way that depicts the part that we believe that we play in the story of life. If we change our part in the story, we will change our response to life; therefore, shifting our paradigm. Sometimes easier said then done, but if we immerse ourselves into the new life that we want to create we have a better chance of getting there. That’s why writing down our goals and being accountable to individuals going down the same path can be so helpful. The vision is all so critical.

Dave, great line, “We respond to life in a way that depicts the part that we believe that we play in the story of life.” This is why I write these blogs…merely to entice the greater wisdom that comes from the comments. Thank you.

I can’t thank the speaker enough who called on me when I claimed to have read half the books she was talking about. She taught me in that one embarrassing moment that I hadn’t really taken to heart all the information I had been taking in.

Because I hadn’t made it personal and applied myself I wasn’t retaining any of the wisdom that could be applied to my life! Since then I’ve always made sure that if I’m listening to something/watching something that is teaching me, that I write what I can use, apply it quickly and really dig into the material.

Great post, so very very true!

Wow, kudos to that speaker, sounds like she really cared!

Kevin, this really hits visioning very well; Awesome work! One of my favorite things to do is to imagine an unfolding world of possibilities. I literally close my eyes, gain a sense of peace and clarity from what it is I believe is in my future and I start putting it to paper for my next steps… There’s an amazing world to create for all of us, and we’re not going to get there by working in it all the time… We have to think objectively, and move forward puzzle by puzzle until it comes together… And by then, there will be something even grander to make happen… Thanks for this!

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Thanks for this Rob, I’ll share it in the show that starts in a minute!

Anytime Kevin! And just heard the awesome show… So appreciate the plug!

Man. . this is good. Can I really see a different future?? Sometimes and sometimes not. Sure. I am a Free Agent now, but other circumstances haven’t changed. It feels my dreams are so far away — sometimes. Like my dream of having a completely remodeled home with more SPACE!, or enough money to travel all over the country- visiting friends and family . . .enough money to give away A LOT to charities and church. .. yet, it (at times) seems like things don’t change. . .BUT they are — just at a snails pace. Nothing is overnight. . .although, I really wish it was.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Wendy…you know, it’s a process. Look at what you’ve done! You’ve found something you believe in, and can make a buck at. Right now, just envision helping women and furthering your cause…and making a buck. You’ll grow to more abundance and be able to reap financial rewards, step by step.

    I can see something better.

It’s why I’m committed to pushing thru. Cause I can hope it, envision it, believe it.

And now we begin the work.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

I feel ya. ‘Seeing’ new things too

The second bold statement is the key here for me.
They can be used to keep positive and grow or as a high to jump from one to the other if they topic are not acted upon.
    Thank you Kevin.

    K, bye
