Free Agents are the lost creationists
October 3rd, 2013 by Agent Kevin Miller
Imagine being a rabbit born into a family of ducks. Wouldn’t that suck. You’d learn how to swim but always be subpar. Then whenever you realized you were a rabbit you’d be fairly lame at jumping like you’re supposed to, as your jumping muscles would have attired. Further, the prospect of staying on land would be scary for a good long while till you acclimated.
Well let me tell you a secret…you’re a Creationist, not…a Fulfillist like you’ve probably grown up as.
It’s true. It’s in our nature to build and create. At a core level it’s a desire or our heart and need of our soul. America was founded by people who came over to start from scratch. After they built things up, a large quadrant wanted to do it again and went west, pioneering to build and create.
Over time we as a culture built so much we needed more and more ‘fulfillers’ to manage it. In a short amount of time (about 150 years) we’ve fallen into thinking we’re ‘Fulfillist’ and forgotten the truth of our beings.
Heck, as kids, all we DO is create. Try to keep a kid drawing in the lines or building legos according to the model and they have no boundaries. They create new things. Till kindergarten at least, then we constrain their natural creation tendencies and spend the next 12 years teaching them to fulfill. Then onto college for four more years of fulfilling. Then into jobs to spend the rest of their lives fulfilling.
We are Creationists. If you find yourself discontent, restless and feeling lost in the flow, the grind, the norm…this is why. And hey, not all are discontent and restless. They are happy fulfilling. But if you were them, you wouldn’t be reading or listening to this right now, eh?
How many of you have projects you do in your spare time involving building and creating? On one hand…a lot of you who are seeking to address the inherent desire. Then there are also many who struggle to actually start anything. I buy lots of sports and construction equipment from people who got the stuff to start…and never did.
When you look at free agency, self-employment…it’s scary. An enticing and exhilarating thought to create something and be free to live fully, but scary. Unknown. And you feel ill equipped.
And you are ill equipped. It’s true.
In the storybook the rabbit would realize it’s a rabbit and not a duck and immediately take off bounding like a maniac. But that’s just a story. As I mentioned above, in truth…the rabbit would be a crappy jumper for a good while. It would need to rejuvenate muscles and brainpower it had never used this way before. It would trip and run into things and get pull a hamstring. Easier to stay a duck.
In looking for a dream job or fitting business opportunity, we are inclined in our culture to ‘look for it’ and hope to find it. See that? We want to find something already set up that we can slide into and ‘fulfill’.
The quote pictured to the right was shared on Facebook by my friend and web developer for business start-ups…Marta Goertzen. It reflects a truth.
What we need to ‘find’ is the opportunity that uniquely fits us and then CREATE it.
I offer this perspective for two reasons:
- I see people get SO close to going after free agency then stall out or shy away because they stand on the precipice of…creating. Building. Taking the first step…sitting down to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard…and really committing to the journey. Doubt sets it’s claws in. We aren’t used to this…we’re used to fulfilling. Not creating. So we back away and go back to what we know. What feels comfortable. As Galadriel in The Lord of The Rings, “…I will diminish…and remain Galadriel.”
- I understand personally. I KNOW I’m a creator and builder. On one hand I love it. On the other, I’ll often dick around doing what’s easy, which is fulfilling stuff, before taking the big plunge to start building. I’m on a ‘family-sabbatical’ now so I can focus and build the new platform for Free Agent Academy. I want to! But it’s just so…hard. It’s hard work.
So take a look at yourself in the mirror (I will too). Admit your discontent and desires, and probably…your fear to try and actually CREATE something.
Get it on the table. You won’t eliminate it just like I can’t eliminate how scatter-brained and forgetful I am. I put that on the table and figure out how to manage it.
You’ve got to figure out how to manage your discomfort and doubt and create something amazing…anyway.
