What is your work or job title? Are you proud of it?

This blog has no point yet other than to ask you for your work or job title and definition. Hopefully in compiling, I’ll discover a relevant point. Will you  help me real quick?

This comes from seeing a guy on Facebook who used his work title as the preface to his name. He was a pastor, so he had ‘Pastor John Doe’. I know some Doctors who do the same thing with their names. It just struck me as odd in the moment. Odd that they do this…or odd that we don’t all. And got me to thinking…

I actually posted this question on Facebook, but I want to go deeper. You can check it out here though: Facebook ‘Title’ Discussion

What’s my title, which is really the role I fulfill. For Doctors and Pastors, the title doesn’t say what they do specifically, it’s just the name of their role. Doctors have to have certain degrees to use the title, Pastors don’t necessarily, so a degree isn’t ‘t he point. And not all Doctors work on the human body, just as not all Pastors preach from pulpits. So again…it’s the overriding ROLE they get the title for.

So what about you and me? What would yours have to be in this perspective? And then what’s the definition of the title. Then…what is it YOU really do and how do you do it?

I’m mainly curious in compiling this to see if we can unearth something of value in the exercise.

EXAMPLES:

  1. Title/Role: Doctor
  2. Definition: a person skilled or specializing in healing arts; especially: one (as a physician, dentist, or veterinarian) who holds an advanced degree and is licensed to practice
  3. What they do: obviously this varies widely, there are ‘Doctors of _______’ tons of things.
  4. How they do it: unique to each

  1. Title/Role: Pastor
  2. Definition: a spiritual overseer; especially : a clergyman serving a local church or parish
  3. What they do: Again, so many. Some preach, some teach, some lead humanitarian efforts and organizations, some just care for various sects of people in need.
  4. How they do it: again, unique to each

  1. Title/Role: Mother
  2. Definition a: a female parent, b: a woman in authority
  3. What they do: Birth, raise and nurture small humans from infancy to childhood to young adulthood and equip them to be independent
  4. How they do it: Not enough space on this page to list it all…

So in asking myself…I had to think. At first I though ‘Inspirer’ or even ‘Seller’, but that’s what the title/role does. I guess it would have to be:

  1. Kevin’s Title/Role: Business Owner (at first I had Businessman, but that was defined as: a man who transacts business; especially : a business executive, which could of course include those traditionally employed, which I am not. So maybe:
  2. Definition: a person who owns a business
  3. What I do: To be simplistic, I’d have to say: I run an online personal development and self-employment school and sell memberships.
  4. How I do it: I broadcast communications to the marketplace in an effort to inspire and motivate people to pursue freedom and inspiration in their lives by discovering who they are, what they can uniquely offer the marketplace and help them create a viable business where their ‘who’ and ‘what’ intersect.

What about you? Would you briefly state your:

  1. Title/Role: (what you are)
  2. Definition: (what that is)
  3. What you do: (what that title/role does)
  4. How you do it: (literally, the primary tasks you fulfill on a daily basis)

Optional
- Are you proud of this?
- If not, what would you choose instead?

Thank you…I’ll report on this!

Definition: someone who helps fight the good fight for better, focused, crystal clear communication of ideas, products, services and values.

What you do: I own a business that coaches small business owners on how to better market their companies, reach their ideal customers and speak the same message in both advertisements and actions.

How you do it: Phone and in-person marketing consultation, copy-editing, media research, coaching, graphic design services, videography, photography and other marketing support functions.

      Beautiful Celia!

    Title/Role: Job Owner

Definition: a person that owns their job; one that is attempting to build a self-sustaining business

What you do: I provide web design and social media consulting to small businesses and non-profits

How you do it: I get person introductions from business associates to business owners or non-profits that are struggling to reach their supporters online. I help them tell their story through a web site or social media platform.

Am I proud of this? Yes & No. Yes- I enjoy helping people face problems and overcome them. No- I don’t like that currently there is not much in the way of residual income. Building a website is usually one and done. I do ongoing maintenance, but that still requires me to do it.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

What about your karate biz, where does it fit in?

      • http://twitter.com/esggraphics Eric Gale

        Right now, it’s not a job- it’s part-time.

  • Christopher Paine

    Title/Role: Customer Service Specialist

Definition: A generic title my company calls people in various areas of the company that are higher than clerk-level, salaried (not hourly), who may or may not deal with outside customers

What you do: My work is specific to billing errors of residential and commercial power users of the utility company I work for

How you do it: Review online reports measuring or working functions, direct other’s work, glorified babysitting of multiple drama drenched personalities.

    Optional
    - Are you proud of this? I am *not* proud of this, thus my continual search for something I will love
    - If not, what would you choose instead? Still figuring it out, but have a better focus than when I started searching earnestly last year.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Thanks Chris. Honored to be on this journey with you.

  • Keith Kemp

Title/Role: Sales. Actually, “Subscription Sales and Database Management”.

Definition: I am an inside salesman doing outbound/inbound calls. I am attempting to sell people on our titles and services.

What you do: On the phone taking orders, up-selling, gathering contact information, cc numbers. I am talking up our publications and products.

How you do it: Calls, calls, calls. Really there isn’t much else for me to do at this company but to call people and ask them if they’d like a subscription.

Are you proud of this? Not really. People do not respect what I do. Many are angry at me for no reason. I think my real point of shame is that I am dealing with such little money.

If not, what would you choose instead? I would rather sell B2B (business to business). Something that helps and improves people lives. I would like something where there is a true opportunity.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Keith, so you have skills you enjoy and appreciate, but want to put them behind something you believe in more?

  • http://www.facebook.com/rob.runyan.9 Rob Runyan

    Title: Airline Pilot

    Definition: Airplane operator

What I do: Fly around the country, stay in hotels, eat at airport restaurants.

How I do it: I show up, strap in, read the checklist, and blast off.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

And it’s what you want to be doing?

  • Jason Smith

    Title/Role: Owner – operator of MacGowan Metals/Facilitator
Definition: One who makes things happen
What you do: Make things happen.
How you do it: People come to me with requests to make something they’ve designed but lack the skills needed to make it a reality. I have those skills. I make it happen. (when it comes to metal work anyway)

People come to me when they have metal objects that have broken, and they want them fixed. I make that happen, usually improving the item so it won’t break again.

People come to me when they want something custom made, like a bumper, headache rack, flatbed, trailer, gate, etc but they are not sure how, or even what it should look like. I make their vague request clearer by engineering/drafting/sketching what I think they are looking for till they know what they are looking for. Then I make it happen.

People come to me when they want hand crafted metal art that can’t be found anywhere else. I make that happen.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

But it sounds like you want to move from fixing things folks bring to you…to creating things from your own heart and mind?

      • Jason Smith

I believe that is what I am wanting. I jumped the gun a bit, quit my job, and started being self employed (which I know is to be the method for my calling) but did not fully dig deep enough to understand what my calling is, or where my passions truly lay.

But, it seems that I enjoy my current work much more when I am being creative, as opposed to simple repair.

As a kid, I remember always trying to build things. Out of anything I could find. And no matter what I found, I could imagine at least 5 things I could convert it into…

        • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

OK, I hear you. One of my best friends is a bronze sculpture http://www.scottstearman.com. He has desire to move from just doing commissioned work, to creating more of his own pieces to sell.

          • Jason Smith

Just checked out his site. He does some stunning work. Growing up I always had an interest in things of metal. Didn’t matter what it was, as long as it was made of metal. Grew up buying books on blacksmithing, casting, knife making. Anything that could get me creating stuff in metals.

I know a local guy here who is sculpting and casting aluminum stuff, though he isn’t quite ready to leave his job at the post office to go full time.

I’m planning a drive out to North Carolina next month. I may have to see about the possibilities of stopping and meeting a few people along the way.

            • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Scott is a great guy to talk to about the business side. When I say I’m working ‘from the cabin’, it’s his place, across the stream from his studio

              • Jason Smith

Excellent. Thank you for pointing me in his direction.

  • RickTexan

    Title/Role: Math Coach
Definition: A person who helps others improve their math skills
What you do: Provide math tutoring to public school students (now primarily to 6th grade students).
How you do it: Provide one-to-one or small group tutoring at a local middle school using creative techniques plus good old repetitive problem practice to help students grasp math concepts.
Am I proud of it? Yes, I feel good about helping youngsters do well in math – but I’d rather be back in industry using my engineering and project management knowledge to help companies (and making 5x what I’m making doing tutoring).

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

So, you’re not content. Are you going to go after where you’d feel more fulfilled?

  • http://www.jmlalonde.com Joe Lalonde

    Title/Role: IT Professional

Definition: A person who deals with the technology side of a business

What you do: I create an enjoyable work environment by ensuring team member’s computers are running properly.

How you do it: Monitor system statistics, respond to issues brought to my attention via phone calls and emails.

Am I proud of it?: Some days but many days I feel it’s a thankless job.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

      So then…overall your content?

  • David Creel

    Title/Role: Lab Technician

Definition: I test various chemicals and petrochemicals for different tests that the client requests

    What you do: See above.

How you do it: using methods, I perform the steps and record the results.

Am I proud of it: Not really. If I had enough time and money, I honestly believe I could train a monkey to do what I do. It is extremely boring, and I don’t get much satisfaction from it. I feel into the industry back in ’06. I hit a breaking part with my first lab job in December 2010. I got tired of my 2nd lab job in May of this year, and I’m quickly growing tired of my current lab job. A few weeks ago, I actually got into trouble for taking initiative. Gossip has been a serious problem in all my stops, and people don’t really want to help new people learn new methods.

What I would like to do is help people with their finances through writing, coaching, and speaking.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Wow David…thanks so much for doing this. Stellar awareness.

    Title: Whisky Advisor

Definition: a person who offers advice and guidance about selecting and buying whisky.

What you do: Work in a small business setting; approach, engage and establish rapport with customers; discovering and explore customer’s whisky wants, broadly identifying the customer’s whisky wants, narrow down the customers whisky wants, get the customer to make the decision. Using my knowledge and understanding of whisky to guide and advise people throughout.

How you do it: questioning (open and closed question) and listening, both to narrow down need and to clarify understanding of need, avoid offering my opinion (where samples are available) rather offer my interpretation (largely based on objective fact). For example, questions such as, what type of whisky do you want, how much do you want to spend, who is it for, what tasting preference do you/he/she have.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Really interesting Oli. So do you enjoy this title?

      • Agent Oli Taylor

Yeah, although my manager/friend today told me that I am whisky advisor and also a sales assistant. Neither fully encompass my calling/strength/glory but I have never had a job/assignment that is as close to my calling as this. I felt more alive this morning when I was offering my truest self.
