You’re fired today, banned from being an employee…what could you offer?

August 22nd, 2012 by Agent Kevin Miller

offer

Take just a moment to imagine this as a reality. If you got fired today and were banned by the government from being a W-2 employee for at least two years, what could you offer?

What is the lowest hanging fruit of something you know how to do or provide…where you know you can deliver value? Something you can make a case for getting paid for.

You could provide ‘X’ in return for pay, to a person or an organization.

What do you think you could provide, and why might you be a good pick to do it over someone else who claims they can offer the same?

This is an incredibly powerful, enlightening and empowering exercise. NOT necessarily because you’ll come up with something brilliant. Maybe you will. But you may just…not. And if that’s the case…well, there is a huge value in the realization and how it’s sabotaging your vocational and business hopes and progress.

Please, give it your best shot below in the comments. I’ll be talking about it with the live audience in today’s show:

the easiest way I know how to make fast cash is hand-painting eggs. i’m skilled at it, people love them, they’re easy to sell at Christmas as ornaments or at Easter as Easter eggs, and it’s fun interacting with people doing this, but there are also some big negatives for me.. . It’s not my dream, it’s linear income and a bit labor intensive, and it’s less time I have to spend on my dream of cashing in on my cartooning skills, which have more earning potential but are going to take longer to make money with. i think about this a lot, and i find it kind of ironic that the stock photo you used for the post looks like a person holding out some painted eggs. is it a sign? :)

How interesting on the pic I used. The point here was just an idea like this. Not a ‘dream’ idea. Thanks Christina!

I find myself in about the same scenario which you have described in your example, and persuasive speaking has been my primary gift or talent and I became an energy consultant
helping schools, businesses, and churches reduce their cost of energy. However, I have now developed crippling arthritis and can only work about four hours at a time and not able
to drive very far, and not sure what my options are at this time.

Oh wow Ron…that is harsh. What’s the diagnosis on your arthritis long term?

Ron, as some one with arthritis, I know how painful it can be. I know for myself, doing karate and other exercises helped me deal with the pain. For the past 5 weeks, I’ve been out of corporate America and it has helped relieve stress, which has helped me even more. I’m down from 12 Advil a day to only two.

The idea of being fired puts a different perspective and would allow a freedom to jump into my adventure with gusto. Often I think the “security” of my job and a regular paycheck holds me back. If/when that is taken away one’s motivatation of dealing with the uncertainty is self employment has a different meaning.

    • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

Absolutely Lee Ann…that’s exactly what I was fishing for. So many things we won’t do till we have to. They we’re superhuman

I understand where you are coming from.

I have a “part-time” job doing direct sales. It is successful in spite of me. Seriously. I just started doing this because I liked the product and wanted the discount. I have promoted twice in the last year. I make overrides on the ladies below me. It was never my intention to do this. My intent is to pursue my financial counseling blog in some fashion. But I am torn. Every time I ask God for a sign, I get one more lady signing up under me or one more milestone is reached. I know this is a “good” problem to have but it is a distraction from what I THINK I should be doing. How do we discern?

As some one “helped” out of the corporate arena last month, this is a very timely post.

I’m no longer hesitant to try and live out my two passions- #1 helping
small businesses with web design and social media and #2 getting paid to
teach karate (to 20+ homeschoolers this fall).

Even while doing these 2 things, I am still trying to get back in to the corporate arena, which is sick. It really is. I know I don’t belong there, but so much of “normal life” says I should be there. I wish the gov’t would ban me from going back.

    Sorry I missed the show.

Thanks for sharing this Eric. “Helped out” last month…I didn’t know. I’ll see if I can get through to anyone at the White House…

Helped out/fired, what’s the difference. I’m on my own now.

Parenting advice. Absolutely. Folks ask me about it constantly, just cause of all these small people following me around everywhere, I guess… Dang, if I could actually get PAID for sharing ideas & tips & encouragement to other moms on how to parent a crew of little ones – wow!

I try to pay in kisses…?

      • http://twitter.com/esggraphics Eric Gale

Ewww! Kissing leads to kids. :)

Okay, cool thing just happened…catching up on emails, and I just got a random request to speak at a local Mom’s Group!!! The lady heard me speak at MOPS last year, and wants to schedule me for one of their meetings. Not for pay or anything…yet… =)

      • http://www.freeagentacademy.com Kevin Miller

That is killer! They will be blessed by you. No worries on pay as long as there’s at least a little free food. You amaze me.
