Where are you fighting against the ‘flow’?

August 16th, 2011 by Agent Kevin Miller

Are you just going with the flow of our culture, or are you fighting it in any area of your life?

Why this focus? Being self-employed is in-and-of-itself, counter-cultural. Not the norm of the masses. So along with the pursuit of self-employment, we generally find other areas of swimming upstream.

*Pictured is my youngest, number seven, Nekoda. 1.5 years and we’re teaching him early to swim upstream of the culture

I posted this question on Facebook today and now have about 45 comments:

There is a flow to our culture, right? Where do you NOT ‘go with the flow’? What aspects of your life have you (or you try) done a 180 and are fighting upstream?

See all the comments posted here:
- Facebook thread

The common topics were:

  • Media/Entertainment
  • Parenting
  • Schooling/Education
  • Work (of course)
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Faith/Church/Tithing
  • Clothing/Dress
  • Finances
  • Consumerism
  • Haircuts/Tattoos/Piercings

Along the way comments were made about ‘drinking the Kool-Aid’ and starting a commune (OK, I brought that one up).

I read over most of them and shared them, including which ones I adhered to, in our show today. Here is the audio. But…I’m asking you to share. Where…do you fight against the flow in your life? Please comment below.

    Kevin,
While I join you and many of the FAA gang in going against the flow (homeschooling, etc.), I thought you might be interested in a slightly different perspective. I posted a blog post on 48days.net (http://www.48days.net/profiles/blogs/the-art-of-conformity) called “The Art Of Conformity” – a different way of saying the same thing perhaps, but sometimes I like to turn the tables. Great podcast!

Hey, it’s not non-conformity just for the sake of being different. But
asking “Why are we doing it this way?” And often going against the norm,
as the norm is so often broken. But go too far and you’re just trying
to be weird, eh? That’s not the point.

    Agreed. Well done, bro.

What a cute shot of little “nekkid Nekoda!’  We are still in the midst of our life-changing vacation where we have basically asked ourselves this question throughout our 3-week road trip with the kids – why are we living the life we do?  What do we want to do differently?  What do we relish about what we have?  If we’re dreaming about it, what’s keeping us from acting on it?  I think having those times to just look objectively and reflect in all areas of your life and then DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT are so crucial to living a life full of purpose and, well, truly LIVING.

So stoked for you guys Ashley! Nothing like a big road trip or life change to shake up your paradigm, eh? I find myself having to stop and ask these big questions more and more, as it’s so easy to get caught up in the flow of the life we’ve created. Eager to hear what life revisions you guys make after this journey…
